How to Add Gmail to Your Desktop as a Widget

Create a Gmail widget that shows your inbox, unread count, and important emails without opening your browser.

Your Inbox, Always Visible

Email is essential but constantly checking it disrupts focus. A Gmail widget gives you inbox visibility without the temptation to dive in.

Gmail Widget Options

Option 1: Inbox Preview

Show your recent emails in a compact list:

  1. Open Gmail in your browser
  2. Use Simple Widgets to select the inbox list
  3. Resize to show 3-5 emails
  4. Position in a screen corner

Option 2: Unread Count Only

For minimal distraction, create a tiny widget showing just your unread count:

  1. Navigate to Gmail
  2. Select only the inbox label with count
  3. Create a small widget
  4. Set frequent refresh for real-time updates

Option 3: Priority Inbox

Focus on what matters:

  1. Open Gmail’s “Important” or “Priority” view
  2. Capture only the priority section
  3. Ignore less important emails

Staying Logged In

Your Gmail widget will stay logged in as long as your browser session is active. For persistent login:

  • Enable “Remember me” when signing in
  • Don’t clear cookies for Google domains
  • Keep a browser window open (can be minimized)

Multiple Accounts

If you manage multiple Gmail accounts:

  1. Open each account in a separate browser profile
  2. Create widgets from each profile
  3. Color-code or position them differently

Privacy Considerations

Gmail widgets display on your desktop. Consider:

  • Positioning widgets away from screen share areas
  • Creating a “presentation mode” without email widgets
  • Using blurred preview widgets during video calls
